Most people are already familiar with the webcomic xkcd. Created by Randall Munroe, this webcomic makes simple, but intelligent statements about life, love, and science. Published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, xkcd is one of the most popular and long-running webcomics out there.

The app for this webcomic has been around for awhile, but the HD version just came out last month. I found that the original version of the app to be much better functionally than the HD version. The original version of the app comes with a comprehensive list of comics. Once you’ve opened a comic, you can press and hold with one finger and you’ll get the alternative text for that comic. It also comes with a shuffle button at the bottom of each page. Additionally, you can save the comic as a photo on your iPhone or post it on Twitter.

The HD version was disappointing on several points. Firstly, it lacked a shuffle button. It’s a webcomic with a noncontinuous format, so a random button seems like a good idea to keep when moving it to HD. Secondly, instead of holding your finger to the screen to bring up the alternative text, the app makes you press a button on the bottom of the page. The problem i that the button is very small and I had a lot of trouble getting it to work with my iPod Touch. Finally, it’s a webcomic with stick figures. I don’t think HD is all that necessary for enjoying this webcomic so really this app is a waste of time. If you want an xkcd app, I highly recommend the regular app over the HD app.
